At last, I return to this blog.  The recent political situation in America has been profoundly depressing for me.  That, coupled with the slowly increasing minor pains of getting older, and the on-going efforts to get to the gym and use it to delay the further deterioration of my heart, keeps me in a melancholic mood rather often...so be forewarned.  I may use this forum to let off a lot of steam. I will also speak of books that I am reading.  Feel free to feed back.

Democracy in Action...with a small "d"

Dispatch from Bellingham, 17 July, 2011 Democracy in Action This past Saturday, I discovered another reason to love this place.   I attended a meeting of the “Rebuild the Dream” project begun by MoveOn.org.   About 30 folks gathered to consider ideas for radically reorienting American politics towards a more humane, fair and (small-d) democratic society.   It was a grass-roots call to action, not a top-down proposal.   Earlier, there had been a request sent out through MoveOn.org to propose ideas to improve the country.   From something like 28,000 of them, selected by around 5 MILLION citizens expressing their choices, 40 top suggestions were chosen for us to discuss and rank-order.   I urge all of you to visit the site http://contract.rebuildthedream.com to find the list and the invitation to participate in this process.   PLEASE…do get involved if you share my concerns for the direction the country is taking. At long last...another post

I've been negligent in keeping this blog going.  I hope to remedy that, beginning with this brief post.  I'm about to begin my 3rd year in Bellingham and I remain glad that I moved here from PA.  This small city has proven to be an oasis of liberalism, of community cohesiveness, and community activism.  The university (Western Washington U) is large (>14,000), attractive, progressive (4 gay-related groups, fully recognized and funded by the institution), with a very fine reputation in many fields.  The geology dept is very good, a fact that delights me.  And now that I've developed some friendships, I'm getting to Seattle for symphony performances regularly, I've a walking group that meets to circle Lake Padden every Sunday (2.6 miles), I've a membership in a fine gym and make it there regularly, though i do have to increase my cardio efforts, and I've become a board member of the local PFLAG chapter.  My lover, Zar, is nearly a Canadian citizen, an...
